I am directed by Hr.Secretary Amery to

inform you that he has received through the Governor of Hongkong a claim from the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company Limited, for compensation for losses in maintaining a steamboat service between Hongkong

and Canton.

2. The Governor states that the food requirements of the Shameen communities could be met by a service of boats running once or twice a week, but he strongly deprecates a discontinuance of the daily service which is at present maintained, as it would be detrimental to British interests generally; and he states that great importance is attached locally to the maintenance of British prestige in this way.

3. The Secretary of State would therefore be glad to learn whether in the oponion of the China
